Dumb Luck, Part 1

            Back before the COVID-19 stay-at-home quarantine began, I began organizing some of my older photos.  This is one of the first photos I sought out for editing.

So, backstory.  I knew in 2009 that Southern Pacific 4449 would be heading to Owosso, MI via Chicago for Trainfest 2009.  But I didn't know when, nor did I know what line.  I was in my early days of railfanning, but only learning about the railroads from a historical aspect.  I didn't yet know what line belonged to what railroad, where each line went, or the significance of the change I was witnessing.  Besides, I was recently laid off due to the Great Recession.

On July 18th, I attended a wedding in Downers Grove.  The reception was held at a bar two blocks south of the Downers Grove depot.  With a few hours to kill before the bride & groom showed up and no money to pay for the all-cash bar, I went exploring.  I walked up to the depot to find a whole bunch of people lingering around with cameras, all gathered around someone with a laptop.  I asked them what was going on, and that's when I learned that SP 4449 was going to be coming through DG sometime within the next 2 hours!
