Side by side comparisons of the latest Sketchbook Ornament of Rapunzel in her purple skirt, versus the first version, released in 2011. They have the same mold for their resin upper bodies and outfits, head and hair, but they are painted differently. The older Rapunzel is 1/4'' taller, due to her longer legs (and larger feet). There is more glitter on the new figure, and she has a satin skirt rather than the three layered tulle skirt of the older one. Here is a detailed comparative review of the two ornaments.
2014 vs 2011 Sketchbook Rapunzel Ornament.
Comparing this year's versus first year's Sketchbook Rapunzel ornaments, by Disney Store. They both depict a full body Rapunzel holding Pascal, with her purple dress. They are similar in look, and have the same mold from the waist up, but have many differences. In the attached photos, the new 2014 figure is on the left, and the old 2011 figure is on the right. All photos were taken in dimming sunlight, with additional flash lighting.
The most surprising difference to me is that the old Rapunzel is 1/4'' taller. I didn't realize this until a put them side by side for this comparative review. Since the upper bodies are the same, the difference is in the length of their legs. The older Rapunzel's feet are also larger than the new one's.
The next major difference is in their outfits. The 2014 Rapunzel has a dark purple satin skirt with glitter decoration, a glitter covered molded peplum (under which the satin skirt is glued), and a light purple laced bodice with a little glitter on the puffy upper sleeves. The satin is very smooth, but the glued on glitter makes it rather stiff. It is pleated, and makes a complete circle around her waist if pulled out. The 2011 Rapunzel has a tutu like skirt, made of three layers of thin purple tulle, with embedded glitter. It is much wider than the new Rapunzel's skirt in its normal state, and prevented me from placing the two figures very close together without putting both of them in my hands. Her molded peplum and and bodice are without glitter, and are lighter purple than the new one. Under their skirts are molded bloomers, which match the colors of their skirts. The new outfit is much better looking and more accurate.
Pascal has the same mold in both ornaments, but the older one has nice details, and looks very movie accurate. The new one is covered in gold glitter, which largely obscures his features, and makes him look rather comical.
Next is her hair. The mold is the same for both figures, but the painting and coloring is different. The new one's hair is a dark golden blonde, whereas the old one was a brownish blonde in color. The flowers in her braid are darker colors in the new figure, and more pastel in the old figure.
Finally we come to her face. The new Rapunzel has a much more pleasant face. Her eyes are simplified, and the green irises are painted slightly over the lower border of her molded eyeballs. The old Rapunzel had slightly crossed eyes, which is understandable since she is looking at the closely held Pascal. However, it made her look a little crazy. The new Rapunzel doesn't look cross eyed, and so looks more normal. The new Rapunzel lacks the eyelashes that the old one had, and her eyebrows are a darker brown. She is also missing the freckles, that were prominent on the old Rapunzel's cheeks. Finally the new Rapunzel's smiling mouth is less open, and she has thinner lips, both of which also makes her look more normal than the old figure.
Overall, I like the new Rapunzel ornament much better than the old one. She is prettier and closer to the movie character. The only drawback is all the glitter, which sheds and lands on your hands and on Rapunzel's face.
