The Loves of Jupiter – Ovid: “Love, Myths and Other Stories” – XCVI

            Ovid's reception at the Medici court in the 16th century: Leda and the Swan. Leda was possessed by Jupiter who had assumed the shape of a swan. She was the mother of Elena, of Clytemnestra and of the Dioscuri.

Elegant “headboard” commissioned by Medici family painted in Florence by Alessandro Allori. The central oval is devoted to the “Rape of Ganymede”, while at the sides we can see others loves of Jupiter such as “Leda and the Swan” and the “Rape of Europe”. The sophisticated grotesques against a gold background show other mythological depictions, from “Apollo and Daphne” to the sleeping Venus and Pan and Syrinx. These dreamlike, amorous subjects are ideal for an object designed to decorate a bedroom. The painter Alessandro Allori seems to have drawn inspiration for the myths of Leda and Ganymed from the draws made by Michelangelo for Tommaso de’ Cavalieri, while the figure of Ganymede is inspired to the traditional engravings that accompanied the vernacular translations of Ovid’s poem.
