Imperial Child as Heracles - a photo on Flickriver

            The statue depicts the hero as a child strangling two snakes. Some scholars have recognized in the somatic features of the young hero's portrait the young Caracalla or, more recently, Annio Vero, son of the emperor Marcus Aurelius.

The Myth
Heracles was born in Thebes, son of Zeus and Alcmene the wife of Amphitryon, Theban hero. The great god seduced Alcmene in the guise of her own husband, just before Amphitryon himself came to her bed. She bore twin sons, Heracles to her divine lover, and Iphicles to her mortal husband. Even in babyhood it became clear which of the boys was the god's child, for when two snakes crawled into their bed, Iphicles cried out in terror, while Heracles seized the snakes and strangled them. Some said that Amphitryon had put the snakes there to find out which boy was his own son; according to Pindar (Nem. i. 49, &c.), and other subsequent writers, Heracles was only a few months old when Hera angry at Zeus' infidelity with Alcmene, sent two serpents into the apartment where Heracles and his brother were sleeping
