LGP Attic amphora – XX - a photo on Flickriver

A rounded lid with a central knob shaped as an upside-down vase, covers the amphora. The knob is decorated with birds and grazing or passing horses. The lid surface exhibits areas with horses, birds, triangles and geometrical patterns (zigzags, checkered triangles etc.).
The neck decoration shows three main areas painted with meanders running in opposite directions, and secondary zones filled by lozenges, rhombuses, checkerboards and zigzags.
The amphora main body decoration is organized in two friezes framed by circular varnish lines defining secondary zones filled by checkered patterns, zigzags and lozenges. The upper frieze shows a chariots parade where bighe alternate with quadrighe; the former are driven by charioteers holding a whip, the latter by two men, the charioteer and a second man with a spear. All these characters wear helmets. Birds and zigzags fill the empty space between chariots.
The lower frieze shows a parade of warriors, wearing crested helmets and armed with double lance and round decorated shield . Birds and zigzags fill the empty surface.
Colors vary from black brown to red. Almost nothing remains of the paintings on the posterior surface.
Plastic snakes are applied in correspondence of the neck lip, on the amphora handles and on the body between them.

The inventory number of this amphora (No. 894) set the name to a pottery workshop, active in Athens (725 - 700 BC), conventionally known as "The Workshop of Athens 894”. “Athens 894” was the pioneer of a new style in fashion on the last quarter of the eighth century. The reception of this kind of pot as the principal vase in Late Geometric graves marks the success of "The Workshop of Athens 894”.
