Last person of the day on the lower pond

            The Slush Cup is an annual event - part of the Spring Carneval at Alyeska in Girdwood, about 30 miles south of Anchorage. The Slush Cup involves a bunch of costumed skiers or snowboarders coming down a steep slope and trying to make it over a pond of ice cold water. This year Alyeska tried something new - they had two ponds with a little strip of snow/ice between the two.

I took these photos in April 2012. I'm usually very tolerant of most things but this event left a sour taste; I couldn't  get a press pass since I don't work for a major TV or newspaper station. I got there early for a good spot; about 5 minutes before the skiers started Alyeska realized they didn't have a spot for the judges, so they booted us out to find new spots. By then the crowds were 8-10 deep in most spots. I missed about half of the skiers while trying to find a new vantage point - finally found one behind a morbidly obese woman that blocked a lot of shots; also had to shoot around a bunch of people with media access passes that had no cameras and just stood there yapping on cell phones most of the time. To make matters worse there were two local DJs that just wouldn't shut up - including telling everyone that if you didn't want to see skiers injured then you weren't a real man. They went on continuously about shrinkage and poop jokes and really demeaning women - I noticed a lot of the people in the crowd were making snide comments about them. Come on, Alyeska - you can do better than this!
