Aquest és el magnific obturador de pla focal de la Leica I, model A. No és ni molt menys el primer obturador de cortina, ni el primer de pla focal, ni tansols el primer de 35mm. Però és el mecanisme que va permetre dotar a Leica de la seva gran fiabilitat i facilitat d'us. I la resta (l'exit absolut del format 35mm) és historia.

Al contrari que els obturadors de pla focal de la mateixa època, el mecanisme disenyat per Oskar Barnack feia servir un sol control per les velocitats, facilitant molt l'ús de les seves càmeres. També, a partir dels prototips "Null Series" del 1923, no requeria tapar l'objectiu en carregar l'obturador, ja que no es velava la imatge. Això sí passava amb els primers prototipus experimentals del 1913 (la famosa Ur-Leica), així com amb altres càmeres de pla focal, com les Graflex americanes.

I tot això en un mecanisme molt petit i ben fet. Èxit assegurat.

Aquest obturador en concret pertany a una Leica I, model A, fabricada el 1929, i funciona molt bé. PERÒ li manca una peça que desembraga el mecanisme per a rebobinar la pel·licula. Això no impedeix fer fotos perfectament, però cal extreure la pel·licula en cambra fosca i rebobinar-la a ma.

This is the magnificent focal plane shutter of the Leica I, model A, the triumph of Oskar Barnack design. It is by no means the first cloth curtain shutter, nor the first focal plane shutter, nor even the first 35mm one. But it is the mechanism that gave Leicas their great reliability and ease of use. And the rest (the absolute success of the 35mm format), as they say, is history.

Unlike the focal plane shutters of the same era, the mechanism designed by Oskar Barnack used a single lever for speed setting, making it much easier to use his cameras. Also, from the 1923 "Null Series" prototypes, it was not necessary to cover the lens when loading the shutter, as it was a self-capping shutter. This did not happen with the first experimental prototypes of 1913 (the famous Ur-Leica), as well as with other focal plane cameras, such as the American Graflex.

And all this in a very small and well crafted mechanism. Guaranteed success.

This particular shutter belongs to a Leica I, model A, manufactured in 1929, and works very well. BUT it lacks a piece that disengages the sprocket wheel, to rewind the film. This does not prevent the camera from taking pictures perfectly, but you need to extract the film in the darkroom and rewind it by hand.
