Marley Hill - a photo on Flickriver

Marley Hill

            A boxing day wander up to Tanfield to blow off the Christmas Day cobwebs has become something of a tradition. It gives a great excuse (although none is really necessary) for a look around the superb Marley Hill engine shed.

The 1854 built shed is believed to be the oldest still in use railway use. Modernity hasn't particularly made it's presence felt and the ancient engineering equipment is mostly still used to maintain the railway's fleet of industrial tank engines.

Visible in these shots are Joicey Collieries No. 3 "Twizell" built by Robert Stephensons in 1891, Keighley Corporation Gas Dept. No. 2 built by Hawthorn Leslie in 1911, Sir Cecil A Cochrane of Redheugh Gasworks - built RSH in 1948 and NCB Number 20 'Gamma' built W.G Bagnall of 1945.
