Bristol Scout - a photo on Flickriver

Bristol Scout

            I am not a particular student of First World War aircraft, but recently as I have contemplated the nature of the microlights, I started to research these aircraft a little more. Many WW1 biplanes would almost fit under the current microlight regulations in many countries.This Bristol Scout C weighs in at just under 600kg.

The light in the hangar revealed just how fragile such an aircraft was, the translucent sides would have offered little protection against a hail of bullets or anti-aircraft fire and I can only wonder at the people who flew and fought with such machines, which I believe were also troublesome to control at the best of times, let alone in a dog fight.

Despite it's apparent weakness, I do like its lines and imagine in peacetime and pleasant weather, it would be great to fly.
