Changes at Okauchee - a photo on Flickriver

            April 1990 finds work progressing on the new railroad bridge over Sawyer Road in Okauchee as part of the state's highway 16 reconstruction project.  Looking east at the new railroad bridge, this shot shows the eastbound main line has already been cut over to the new bridge on the left while the westbound main has yet to be re-aligned.  The ballast hopper is supporting the construction project.  A nice side effect of the work here was all the slow orders for the trains traveling thru the project site.  The Springbank Road crossing gates are in the foreground, the old highway 16 alignment is to the left.

In September 1968, the Sawyer Road crossing was the site of a terrible wreck of a westbound Milwaukee Road freight that ended up dumping dozens of cars on the ground.  I have a few photos of the wreck that I'll post at some point.

Today this is west end of Nashotah Siding, and the ballast hopper is resting at the approximate location that most westbound trains in the siding end up holding at for a meet.
