It was an almost surrealistic experience to stand there in almost absolute silence and being able to absorb the overwhelming peaceful atmosphere at this lake. Because of Covid strict rules apply when entering Iceland so that only very few tourists are traveling around.

Thingvellir, being a Unesco World Heritage site, is the oldest national park of Iceland and is very unique in many respects. Thingvellir is for example one of the very few places on earth where it can be seen very clearly that the American en Eurasian tectonic plates are being torn apart by 1-2 centimeters every year. Also in historical respect the site is unique because the oldest parliament in the world was established there in 930.
