San Giovanni Rotondo è un comune italiano di 27.304 abitanti della provincia di Foggia in Puglia, famoso al mondo per ospitare le spoglie di San Pio da Pietrelcina, frate cappuccino vissuto a lungo nella cittadina. Il comune fa parte del Parco Nazionale del Gargano.La città di San Giovanni Rotondo fu fondata nel 1095 sulle rovine di un preesistente villaggio del IV secolo a.C.; di questo borgo restano dei segni visibili, come alcune tombe ed un battistero circolare (l'epiteto "Rotondo" deriva proprio da questo) che anticamente era destinato al culto di Giano, Dio bifronte, e in seguito fu consacrato a San Giovanni Battista. Durante il basso Medioevo ha sempre ricoperto incarichi importanti nell'organizzazione economica del Meridione; sotto il Regno delle Due Sicilie ad esempio, ha ricoperto l'incarico di stabilire i prezzi della mercanzia commercializzata nel regno.San Giovanni Rotondo, nel Medioevo, era circondato da mura possenti, con 15 Torri e 4 porte, edificate tra XII e XIV secolo; oggi restano ben poche tracce della fortificazione e delle torri. Torre Quadrangolare: era una delle 15 torri edificate fra il 1150 ed il 1194, completate e consolidate verso il 1234 dall'imperatore svevo Federico II. Torre Cilindrica: era una delle 15 torri edificate tra il 1150 e il 1234, un tempo merlate. Ora è sede del Museo delle Arti Popolari. da wikipedia

San Giovanni Rotondo is the name of a city and comune in the province of Foggia, Puglia region, southern Italy. In 2006 it had a population of 26,442.San Giovanni Rotondo was the home of Saint Pio of Pietrelcina from 28 July 1916 until his death on 23 September 1968. The Padre Pio Pilgrimage Church was built in devotion to the saint and dedicated on 1 July 2004. The city is renowned for its hospital and medical-research centre Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza (Home for the Relief of the Suffering) founded by Saint Pio of Pietrelcina.The nearby Sanctuary of Saint Michael the Archangel is also the site of Catholic pilgrimages and was visited by Pope John Paul II in 1987. The municipality is part of the National Park of Gargano. The town of San Giovanni Rotondo was founded in 1095 on the ruins of a pre-existing village in the 4th century BC. There are still visible signs,of this village as some graves and a circular baptistery (the epithet "round" derives from this) that was once destined for cult of Janus, two-faced God, and was dedicated to St. John the Baptist. During the late middle ages has always held important positions in the economic organization of the South; under the reign of the two Sicilies, for example, He was appointed to establish the price of the goods for the whole Kingdom .San Giovanni Rotondo, in the middle ages, was surrounded by mighty walls, with 15 towers and 4 doors, built between the 12TH and 14th centuries; today very few traces remain of the fortifications and towers. Quadrangular Tower: it was one of the 15 towers built between 1150 and 1194, completed and consolidated towards the svevo Emperor Federico 1234 II.
