Clifton Hall (03). Nottinghamshire. March 2021

            The manor house, known as Clifton Hall is situated on the right bank of the River Trent in the village of Clifton, Nottinghamshire now partly the campus of Nottingham Trent University. The Hall is a Grade I Listed Building. The manor of Clifton was noted in the Domesday Book of 1086. 

The current building dates back to the 17th Century (1666) and is associated with the seat of the Clifton of Clifton family. Remodelled and embellished in the early to mid C18, and in 1874 by Milner.

There were significant alterations throughout the Georgian era, Sir Robert Clifton remodelling the elevations and much of the interior of the south wing including the Octagon between 1731 and 1748. Between 1778 and 1797 Sir Gervase Clifton employed John Carr of York (1723-1807) to add the full-height bow on the south elevation (at ground-floor level this was Lady Clifton's dressing room that opened on the left and right into the attached greenhouse - now removed).

In the 1960s the Hall was extended in an unsympathetic style for the school and a free-standing annexe was built adjoining the west boundary of the walled garden.

From 1958 - 1976 it was Clifton Hall Girls' Grammar School. Age 11-18.

There were two buildings: the old Clifton Hall and a new building further up in the grounds, this latter housed the school's Science department, Art rooms and Assembly Hall. Clifton Hall had some great rooms, for example the well-known, "Red Room" (whose ceiling featured the Clifton family's many coats of arms) and was reputed to be haunted; a reputation, perhaps, deriving from the intense, almost claustrophobic depth of vermillion paint used in this room. 

When the school finally closed in July 1976, a large model of a Phoenix - (the school's emblem) - was burnt to signify the end of the school. The uniform was all purple, skirt, blazer, purple/yellow tie and a white blouse. On closing, the buildings became part of Nottingham Trent University. In 2004 they were up for sale for £500,000.

Nearby to the school is a cliff that overlooks the River Trent. It is said that a lady of the Clifton family jumped off the cliff and died when she was jilted by her lover.
