            Nottingham High School. Independant day school for boys and girls aged 4-18. Founded in 1513. Over 500 years of history. A Grade II Listed Building. Date first listed: 30-Nov-1995.

Nottingham High School, Arboretum Street. Amazing building designed by Thomas Simpson with Thomas Chambers Hine and built 1866 -1867.

The rather odd proportions are because what now appears to be the ground floor was actually former basements excavated out twenty years later to design of Robert Evans. Upper floor added on east side 1910, is when most battlements went.

The School was founded as the “Free School” by Dame Agnes Mellers and held in St Mary’s Church in the Lace Market. The School’s Foundation Charter was granted by King Henry VIII.

The new school was built and opened in its current location on Arboretum Street. It changed its name from The Free Grammar School to Nottingham High School. 1868.

In 1949 the school was granted its full coat of arms with the three Merles of the Mellers family at its centre.

1951 – 1959. Kenneth Clarke attended the School. He later went on to become a Conservative politician, serving as Home Secretary, Chancellor of the Exchequer and Lord Chancellor.

1978 – 1985. Labour politician Ed Balls attended the School and later served as Shadow Home Secretary and Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer.

2015. The School became Co-Educational.

2021. Nottingham High School is awarded The Sunday Times East Midlands Independent School of the Decade.
