Milkweed Pod (Explored 10/12/21) - a photo on Flickriver

            This Milkweed pod is beginning to release its seeds each to be carried in the wind with their flossy parachutes. Milkweed plants are crucial to Monarch butterflies who feed on them and deposit their eggs on them.  Monarch caterpillars feed only on the Milkweed leaves. Milkweed plants can be toxic to livestock who eat them.  Monarchs, though, actually depend on consuming the toxic substances in the plant because it gives them a defense against predators who avoid eating them for this reason.
