The fourteenth-century painting of the cloister of San Biagio nel Carmine

            An unexpected find

When the consolidation works of the wall structure of the municipal church of San Biagio began in 1999, care was taken to adequately protect the fourteenth-century wall painting preserved in the cloister, an Annunciation that decorated the external profile of what appeared to be an ogive profile then buffered. , planning to restore it at the end of the works. With the progress of the construction site, however, it became clear that the infill wall was structurally unstable and that the geometric decoration painted along the profile of the arch continued in under the arch. Surveys conducted in spring 2005 made it possible to ascertain that it actually concealed a niche with a painting, depicting the Madonna and Child on the throne and other characters.

The work was incomplete in the lower part, due to a vast phenomenon of rising damp, but the whole upper portion was still clearly legible and completely intact, because it remained hidden for centuries. The colors were exceptionally bright, even if the humidity had caused a myriad of small crater-like elevations, especially on what remained of the two figures depicted in the lower part, and the obvious alteration of some colors.

Given the exceptional nature of the discovery, it was deemed appropriate to proceed with extreme caution and carry out some preliminary investigations, both in terms of the technical execution and with regard to the circumstances of realization of the work in relation to the Carmelite complex. In this way important cognitive data were acquired on the destination, the possible client, the iconography and the historical-artistic coordinates of the work. It has also been ascertained that the Annunciation, due to its executive technique and iconographic and formal characters, is part of the same work and was treated as such in the restoration.
