Invaders. Common Knotgrass, Polygonum aviculare, and Procambarus clarkii, Louisiana Crawfish, Gaasperplaspark, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

            There I was on my knees on the edge of the path around the Gaasperplas. Not for devotions but rather for Olymp to get a good look at Common Knotgrass, Polygonum aviculare. It's mostly ignored because the flowers are so tiny (a mere 2-3 mm across), and many fastidious gardeners hate this Birdweed because it creeps through the tiniest cracks in their tiled gardens and patios.
I'd felt a tickle to my sandaled feet and intent on teaching Olymp ignored it.  But when Olymp was ready I looked, and there it was: a really very beautiful Louisiana Crawfish, Procambarus clarkii. This Crawfish is invasive in The Netherlands, and it is said to make life hard for endemic Crawfish, Astacus astacus. There were others sidling their way from the Lake to a ditch on the inner side of the path. I suppose I could have collected a little meal, but I'd already been to the grocer's... So this afternoon that visit saved lives!
