From Old French songe, from Latin somnium. Compare Italian sogno, Spanish sueño and Portuguese sonho. Obsolete spelling of song
Songe \sɔ̃ʒ\ male
Dream, idea, imagination of a person who sleeps.
Saint Gregory of Nyssa, opponent of the Oniroscopes, saw in the songes only a temporary shaking of the faculties of the soul, due to a memory of the emotions we had just felt, and he poetically compared the spirit of the man agitated by a dream to the string of the harp who had just thrown a sound and who still vibrated when the sound had vanished.
When I wake up, it seems to me that I just had a bad dream. These are not dreams that require interpretation according to the principles of the Golden Key... But they disappear with the fumes of the night. Songes are not unalterable photographs: they "pass" into the sun and eventually fade away. - (Jules Verne, Claudius Bombarnac, ch. XIX, J. Hetzel et Cie, Paris, 1892)

Demystify the dream: Proverbs 9:17 "The bread of mystery is pleasant".
Many people buy dream interpretation books, but this subject is the subject of many references in the Bible that deals with this subject and we see that it was the profession of some men: Genesis 41, or Daniel 2:1,2,7. Magicians and astrologers were the ones who explained dreams. Just like today. Some people buy books about dreams in order to discover the meaning that will reveal their future, a message for a situation, or know what their subconscious wants to teach them.
But let us demystify the dream, because dreaming is a natural thing, it is even a need.
1/ The origins of dreams - Dreams come from the different activities of the day or the previous days: Ecclesiastes 5, 2.6. -
The "dream style" comes from our character; for example, we are fearful by nature will make dreams in which there are situations of fear. -
Dreams are also the result of emotional or even visual shocks - Dreams are also the result of our desires, needs, lack: Isaiah 29:8 - -
And of course of divine origin. - There may be an evil origin in those who practice the occult sciences
2/ The memory of dreams -
Most dreams are forgotten (Job20, 8, Psalm 90, 5, Psalm 73, 20). The question that arises: what meaning does it have when the memory of the dream persists? The memory of some dreams lasts because they have been strong and intense or repetitive. Perhaps also, that God wants to talk to us. But even some forgotten dreams come from God, as the Bible shows: Nebuchadnezzar has forgotten the dream that came from God, (Daniel 2:1-6) and he will remember it when Daniel gives him the explanation (Dan2:47). So the memory of a dream is not necessarily a criterion.
3/ God speaks through songes (premonitions dreams) Job 33, 14-18
God speaks through various means, songes are one of them. In this passage, we read that God speaks through songes Examples : to Abimelech Genesis 20:3; to Jacob Genesis 28:12,31/10; to Laban Genesis 31:24; to Joseph Genesis 37:5,9,10,20; to the sample and bunker Genesis 40:5; to Pharaoh Genesis 41:7,15,25,26; to Solomon 1 Kings3:5; to a Midianite Judge7:13; to Nebuchadent Daniel 2:1,4/1-2; to Daniel 7:1;
to Joseph, fiancé of Mary Matthew 1:20, Matthew 2:22; to the Magi Matthew 2:1,2; to Paul Acts 16:9; to Pilate's wife Matthew 27:19.
Through these examples we see that God reveals what he is going to do. It was not every night that God spoke to them in a dream! God spoke through songes to the prophets of the Old Testament (Numbers 12:6), but in the New Testament the perfect revelation is in Jesus (Hebrews 1:1-3.
4/ The prophets of the Old Testament:
Numbers 12:6 God spoke to the prophet through dreams: Jeremiah 23:25-32, Jeremiah 29:8, Zechariah 10:2 In Deuteronomy 13:5 we also read that a prophet's dream could be fulfilled but if he teaches rebellion against God we should not listen to him.
5/ In the New Testament
Having dreams and visions is a consequence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:15-18).
Young people: visions: this corresponds to the dynamic nature of young people.
old people: songes corresponds to the thoughtfulness of the elderly.
God can speak in a dream to someone to lead them to conversion
But as in the Old Testament, some people can songes for purposes that are in vain.
6/ The purpose of dreams
Returning to the text of Job 33:14-18, we see some reasons for this: - warnings (Veret 16) - He puts the seal on his instruction (Verse 16) -
to turn away from evil and preserve from pride (Verse 17) - a
to guarantee his soul from the "pit" (of hell) because what God says in the dream leads to repentance and Jesus.
through these examples we can see other explanations: - counselor - announce the future - give direction (apostle Paul). Ex: John Newton worried about the salvation of his soul had a dream that revealed to him the path of salvation.
