IMG_450_RI_082781_Solon - a photo on Flickriver

            Rock Island 1344 has stashed a handful of cars in the elevator track at Solon, and is heading back north, down the hill, to get the rest of the train.  Guarding the 5th Street crossing is Francis Grochala, and the engineer this day was Stan Schreckengost.  I didn't record the other two gents names.  Francis took a spill earlier in the day and skinned up his elbow, and you can see the bandage they got from the Solon Pharmacy that afternoon.  Both men worked for the Rock Island trustee until 1983 or so, when their work ended.  Francis went on to work for Iowa Interstate for many years, and actually was my boss until 2002.  He does remember letting a junior high kid with a camera sit in his Rock Island truck that day to stay out of the rain.  When Francis decided to retire in 2002, his job went up for interview and I ultimately was awarded it, and still am in that position today.
