In 1924 he designed and built a car that made him a legend, the Type 35. Although success in racing took a while, the interest of potential buyers certainly do. Initially reluctant to use a supercharged engine, he eventually relented and allowed a supercharger based on the Roots blower design to be added to the 2-liter Type 35C and the 2.3 liter Type 35B. From 1927 to 1931, Bugatti’s French racing blue cars dominated the racing world. The Type 35 would prove to be one of the most successful cars in history. Their fine craftsmanship and ability to be competitive “right out of the box” made for their appeal.

French driver Rene Dreyfuss stated: “You could put the car wherever you wanted, the handling was fantastic... the precision of the steering was something fantastic”.

In all, around 400 Type 35s were built and raced by a legion of drivers from rough amateurs to big stars such as Dreyfuss, 1929 Monaco GP winner William Grover Williams, Pierre Veyron and Louis Chiron. Between 1924-1927, this army of drivers estimate about 1850 victories, both big and small. Despite this success, Bugatti was slow to incorporate new innovations, which were not made in-house. As hydraulic brakes became older standards, Bugatti continued to use cables. According to the legend, when one of his customers complained about the delay, he replied; “I make my cars to race, not to stop.”
