Lt. General Sir William Russell, 2nd Baronet of Charlton Park, was born 5 April 1822 in Calcutta, Bengal, India, the son of Sir William Russell, M.D. (1773-1839) and Jane Eliza Sherwood (1797-1888) (second wife). After taking the degree of M.D. at Edinburgh, the senior Russell went to Calcutta and built a large medical practice. He was back in London in 1831 when he rendered extensive medical services during a cholera epidemic, and as a result was made the 1st Baronet of Charlton Park. Jane Eliza Sherwood was the daughter of Major General James Doddington Sherwood.
Lt. General Russell became a cornet in the 7th (The Queen’s Own) Hussars, a cavalry regiment, on 2 July 1841. His military career progressed as follows:
27 February 1846 - Lieutenant 16 April 1847 - Captain 13 August 1857 - Major 20 July 1858 - Brevet Lieutenant Colonal 20 July 1863 - Colonel 24 December 1868 - Major General 1 July 1881 - Lt. General (retired)
In 1854, Russell was appointed as aide-de-camp to Lord Clarendon, then Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. Russell then served as a staff officer, 1855-1856, during the Crimean War. Russell served during February 1858 - March 1859 in the Indian Rebellion. Although the rebellion began in 1857, it took the 7th Hussars several months to reach India; when the 7th arrived it had 25 officers and 653 men. Russell was present at the repulse of the enemy’s attack on Alumbagh (note: period spellings), and the siege and capture of Lucknow. He led the 7th Hussars at the affairs at Barree (April 1858, mentioned in dispatches) and Sirsee. In the June 1858 Battle of Nawabgunge, he led two successful calvary charges against troops threatening the flank of the British forces. He was then involved in minor actions at Fyzabad, Sultanpore, the Byswarra District campaign, at the Pandee Nuddee stream, Paleeglat, and Hyderghur. He then took part in the Trans-Gogra District campaign, including actions near Churdah, taking the Fort of Majideah (28 December 1858), and attack on the Bankee. On 29 December, he led an aggressive charge at the Raptee river and was mentioned in dispatches. Russell was awarded the Indian Medal with clasp, and was made a Companion of the Order of Bath in 1859. The artist was Lieut-General H Hope Crealock. Russell rushed forward to halt the charge to prevent further loss of life at it was discovered that the river had hidden dangers. The action took place on 29th Dec 1858 and Sir William Russell was the commanding Officer. He is dressed in a white jacket and blue trousers with a yellow or gold stripe. He is full bearded and he has a white turban or pagri. His pouchbelt appears to be the dress version with gold lace and red edges.)
Russell, who served as a member of parliament from Dover during 1857-1859, returned to England in 1859, but lost his seat in Parliament. He then served as an MP for Norwich from 1860 until his retirement in 1874. He moved to the command of the 14th Hussars in 1861 to accomodate his political career. He was married in 1863 to Margaret Wilson (1838), the only child of Robert Wilson. Russell primarily lived in Westminster after his return from India. and in 1881 was living at 33 Belgrave Road, with his wife, two children, and eight servants. Lt. General Sir William Russell passed away on 19 March 1892.
