Stranger 48 of 100: Bailey - a photo on Flickriver

I was looking for a stranger that was colorful, outgoing and had a great smile. As I wondered toward the art building on campus I ran into Bailey. Bailey is a dance minor and had just come out of dance rehearsal. I approached her and explained the project and asked if she had some time to spare to get a good portrait. She agreed without hesitation (I love it when that happens). Her first question for me was if I was a photography major and was doing this for a school project. I told her that it is more of a personal project because I love interacting with people, and wanted to improve my skills. I told her that I thought her smile and bright lipstick would make an excellent portrait so I moved her to a location that had a plain background because I wanted to maker her jump off the screen. I explained that I just bought a reflector and was till trying to figure out how to use it. I got a “nuclear blast” of light from the silver side of the reflector. The “nuclear blast” made her eyes pop and I am thankful Bailey is used to stage lights because I am pretty sure the silver reflector nearly blinded her! I ended up flipping the reflector to the white side and liked the subtleness a lot better. One of my favorite parts of this interaction was when I attempted to use the diffuser. I had never used one before and I couldn’t exactly have her to hold it over her head without getting her arms in the shot (even though we tried!). She was laughing so hard and I can only imagine the scene. As you can tell from this shot it was pretty windy, and in front of her is some random photographer holding a diffuser straight above his head like a white shark fin. The wind is blowing like crazy so I could hardly keep the shade on her face. I decided not to use those shots because to hold the diffuser and shoot with one hand I couldn’t get all of Bailey in the frame. Either way, it was a great memory and I am pretty sure she will remember me as a crazy dude who asked for a portrait and went to great lengths to get it.
