Skimming Away!

            I've always been fascinated by black skimmers.  They feed by flying low, skimming with their lower mandible in the water.  They snap their bill shut when they feel a fish, also snapping their heads back.  One would think this is highly inefficient, but I was amazed at how many fish they catch in this manner.

There is a large colony of skimmers on the south end of Fort Myers Beach, which was where this image was taken.  While the skimmers were pairing off and in the nest building stage (not much really, just a depression in the sand), no little ones were out and about while we were there.
