Wednesday Music: a lousy week with Organisation (RIP Florian Schneider of Kraftwerk)

            First afrobeat drummer Tony Allen, then punk/prog/kitchen-sink keyboardist Dave Greenfield of the Stranglers, and now one of the two principal members of Kraftwerk (although he retired from the band in the early 2000s). Unfortunately, I only have Allen (both with Fela Kuti and solo) and Greenfield/Stranglers recordings on CD, so they can't get the treatment here.

This album, Tone Float, is by Organisation, Ralf and Florian's band prior to Kraftwerk (since I already featured a Kraftwerk LP just a few months ago). The jazzy hippie jams don't really sound anything like Kraftwerk. But following it with the first four Kraftwerk albums (ending with Autobahn) shows a natural progression as they found their voice as the world's first fully-formed electronic pop band, first replacing a live rhythm section with primitive drum machines, losing any jazz influences, replacing "natural" instruments (Florian's flute & violin) with synthesizers, and using sequencers to orchestrate their sound, once the technology allowed.

At my feet, you can see the inside gatefold of a reissue/repackage of the first two Kraftwerk LP's (with photos of Ralf and Florian), and two live LP's both from the brief era when only Florian was in the band (assisted by the 2 members of Düsseldorf neighbors Neu!). The live albums, like the one I'm holding, are bootlegs. There's currently one copy of the Organisation LP on discogs.com, asking price over $2500, so you can be certain I don't own an original!

The color scheme of my outfit is a reference to a later Kraftwerk look ... top and skirt both by Bebe, with lace Betsey Johnson pumps I love.
