Cypripediums... everywhere! [Explore 2020-01-16]

            How many Cypripedium flowers can you count in this photograph???

This is an example of the habitat and profusion of flowering plants we saw at several places in and around Dutch Harbor/Unalaska. We found hundreds (likely thousands) of Cypripediums belonging to a hybrid swarm of plants (of xalaskanum) that exhibit mixed amounts of characteristics of both parents (guttatum and yatabeanum). We saw nothing resembling Cyp. guttatum, only a couple of plants of Cyp. yatabeanum, and the rest presumably Cyp. xalaskanum.

An amazing sight to see!
