This "Tagged 16 Things" game has been going around Flickr, and it took a few tags from my contacts to push me to do it. I do think it is a great idea.

It seems to have started over at My Space, with 16 short and random facts. As I read more of the recent exposés on Flickr it seems that the game is getting deeper and deeper. In my mind, that makes it funner and funner. :)

So here goes 16.

1. There is only 1 thing in the world that is better than good sex with someone you love, and that is good health. The funny thing is, you don't believe this until you are very sick.

2. In the early 70's I visited Xerox PARC, and was shown a computer mouse and a "window" on a computer screen, and I said "so what". A dozen years later I saw an Apple Macintosh in a Macys store (!), drew a line on the screen with the mouse, and said "I'm ready for one of these."

3. When I was a kid my father's stepmother insisted that she knew I was going to be an artist, by looking at my hands. I denied that, having set my sights on the sciences. I was a geek for the sciences: I ran a weather station, collected rocks and bugs and butterflies (and learned how to mount them), had a chemistry lab in the basement, and became a HAM radio operator (I still know the Morse Code). My favorite reading materials were high school and college science textbooks.

4. I played electric bass in a 12 piece soul review called The Diamonds. This is despite being trained in the classical flute. We played songs by James Brown, The Temptations, Otis Redding... good stuff.

5. In college, I started out as a Mathematics major, and graduated with a degree in Architecture and Fine Arts. I blame it on the LSD.

6. I tend to think of my life as a series of accomplishments, but I hate bragging, so that makes this assignment fairly difficult. I suppose we can be known by our failures as much as our accomplishments. Problem is, I just can't think of anything I failed at. (: :). Just kidding. I am neither rich nor famous.

7. The most important person in the world to me is my wife (34 years together). We bought a house, and later got married on the back deck. Running a close second are our 2 children. Kids no longer, but always kids to me.

8. Both my wife and I are refugees from the East Coast economic/intellectual establishment. We met in an urban commune in San Francisco (Project One). A few years after the Summer of Love we were trying to live a dream, and invent new ways of surviving in the city. These were some of the best times of my life. A few photos here:

9. I grew up in a household where both of my parents took photos, and we had a darkroom in the basement. When I was about 10 years old I was surprised to learn the most people did not know how to develop and print pictures. You might already know this about me; it's in my profile, but it is so relevant to this audience! Acetic Acid and Sodium Thiosulfate ran in my veins.

10. After college, I knew I did NOT want to sit at a desk for work. I was a slide show editor for an ad agency, worked in a sign factory, and started my own business designing and printing fabrics ( ZOO-INK ). There were very few desks involved. Now, I make my living sitting at a desk. Damn computers!

11. I often feel like an outsider.

12. My father is Jewish and my mother is Quaker. That is, until they both died. I am sure their ashes have mingled upon this earth.

13. I love logic and clear thinking, but I think many of the problems of the human condition stem from people thinking in black and white, and not being able to understand both sides of an issue at the same time. In fact, if something is as clear as can be, it is probably wrong (see #14).

14. If I were king, I would provide free and voluntary birth control to every person on this planet. Our attempts to save the earth are too easily negated by another mouth to feed.

15. Travelling is perhaps the most effective way of expanding one's mind. There are many styles of travel; I prefer walking and biking. I have biked from Telluride, Colorado to Moab, Utah, and walked around the Mt Blanc Massive in France/Italy/Switzerland. Here I go bragging again, but I am shaped by my experiences!

16. I was thinking I should leave #16 blank, to allow me to fill in some new thoughts later on. But no, this is a photography group, so I will leave you with the photo above as my #16.

Footnote: I was first tagged 3 weeks ago, and thought I would write many items over the weeks, and when done I could edit and rearrange them. Well, I could only think of a few things I was willing to share. Then when I started writing I could barely stop. It was really quite easy, and the ones above are nearly a stream of consciousness. So if you get tagged, don't be scared - give it a try!
