Cristo Re - 4

            Qui convivono il passato remoto e quello prossimo: la torre merlata medievale e il Sacrario.  La prima è quella appartenente all’antica fortezza di Rocca Guelfonia, dove nel 1284 venne rinchiuso Carlo II d’Angiò “lo storpio”, sconfitto in una battaglia navale dalla flotta siciliana-aragonese. Sulla torre, c’è la terza campana più grande d’Italia, con il bronzo fuso dei cannoni del primo conflitto mondiale. Accanto, l’imponente Sacrario inaugurato nel 1937, ispirato alla basilica di Superga, con una cupola in stile barocco. Edificio-simbolo di memoria storica, per rendere omaggio ai soldati morti nelle due guerre. In una nicchia della scalinata esterna c’è una scultura marmorea di Cristo Re realizzata da Tore Calabrò. Dentro, riposano le salme dei caduti e su di loro veglia il monumento al Milite ignoto di un altro artista messinese, Antonio Bonfiglio. Le due grandi tele sono di Salvatore e Guido Gregorietti. Circondano la scupola le otto statue in bronzo di Teofilo Raggio, in stile razionalista, raffiguranti le Virtù teologali e cardinali.

Distant and recent past meet here: the medieval embattled tower and the Memorial. The first one belonging to the ancient fortress of Rocca Guelfonia, where, in 1284, Carlo II d’Angiò “the cripple”, defeated in a naval battle by the Sicilian-Aragonese fleet, was imprisoned. On the tower there is the third largest bell in Italy, made with the cast bronze of the guns of the First World War. Next to the tower, there’s the impressive Memorial with a baroque dome, opened in 1937 and inspired by Basilica di Superga. Symbol building of historical memory, it was designed to pay tribute to the soldiers who died in the two wars. In a niche of the external staircase there’s a marble sculpture of Cristo Re by Tore Calabrò. Inside, the corpses of the fallen rest in peace and the monument to the Unknown Soldier by another artist from Messina, Antonio Bonfiglio, watches over them. The two big paintings are by Salvatore and Guido Gregorietti. Eight bronze statues in a rationalistic style by Teofilo Raggio depicting the cardinal and  theological Virtues surround the dome.
