Merville is a friendly hamlet at the northern end of the Comox Valley, It was named after the location in France where Canadians set up their initial field headquarters during World War I. Merville B.C.’s first inhabitants were a group of soldiers and their families resettled by the government immediately following that war. It is located between the City of Courtenay, Mount Washington, Dove Creek, and Black Creek near the east coast of Vancouver Island. The borders are nebulous and often hotly debated by residents, but clearly include Merville Road, Merville General Store, and Merville Community Hall, likely at the northern end. The agricultural community has outlasted and may have supplanted both the older logging and milling community referred to as the Headquarters townsite (along the Tsolum River at the end of Headquarters Road), and the Grantham community near Tsolum Elementary School.

(from 1922 - Wrigley's British Columbia directory) - MERVILLE - a post office and farming settlement under control of Land Settlement Board, in Comox Provincial Electoral District, on Campbell River Road, 7 miles northwest of Courtenay, on the E. & N. Ry., the nearest telegraph point, and with which there is stage connection, and 10 miles from Comox which is reached by C. P. R. boats. Alternate services of various denominations by ministers from Courtenay. Resources: Farming and timber. The population of the district was about 500.

The Merville General Store / Post Office is a staple in this community - it has been serving the island Hwy since the 1920's.

The Merville Post Office was established - 1 December 1919.
