            Hazelton is one of the oldest settlements in northern British Columbia; its European settlement dates back to 1866 when the Collins Overland telegraph went through. Hazelton was the original gateway and staging area for the Omineca Gold Rush of 1869-73.

- from 1908 "Lovell's Gazetteer of the Dominion of Canada" - HAZELTON, a post office in Cassiar District, B.C., reached by steamer from Victoria to Port Essington. It is situated on the Skeena River, west of Naas River and west of Sabine Lake. 

(from - Wrigley's 1918 British Columbia Directory) - HAZELTON - a post office and station on G. T. P. Railway, and on the Skeena River, in Omineca Provincial Electoral District, 177 miles east of Prince Rupert. Centre of a large farming, ranching and mining district. Has Dominion Government telegraph office, Anglican and Methodist churches. The population in 1918 was 500. All branches of retail business fully represented. Local resources: Farming and mining.
