SS Peter & Paul Cathedral, St Petersburg

Situated within the island fortress that bears the same dedication, the Saints Peter & Paul Cathedral is the oldest of St Petersburg's landmarks and the city's first cathedral. It was constructed between 1712 & 1733 and commissioned by Peter the Great from Italian architect Domenico Trezzini.

It is most notable as the last resting place of most of the later Tsars (including the Romanovs whose remains were interred in 1998) and for its impressive architecture, including the astonishingly slender and tapering spire crowning the west tower. The interior is richly adorned and culminates in a towering gilded iconostasis under the dome of an unusual Baroque design.

The cathedral makes a striking landmark when viewed across the Neva from the city (situated almost opposite the Winter Palace).
