(Explore) 20110824 Monumental Hotel

Edinburgh's Balmoral Hotel, with Calton Hill, and the Nelson Monument, Playfair Monument, Dugald Stewart Monument, National Monument of Scotland, and Martyrs of Reform monument in the background, as shot from Edinburgh Castle.

Originally a railway station hotel (the North British Hotel until 1991), the "NB's" Victorian baronial structure sits adjacent to Waverley Street station, at the North end of Princes Street, between the Scott and Nelson monuments. The hotel's 58m clock tower is a prominent landmark in the city, as are the many monuments behind.

Given it's location and prominence, the hotel has had many celebrities stay there over the years. In recent history, J.K. Rowling completed the last of her Harry Potter books during a stay in 2007.

Shot with a Nikon D40, fitted with a Tamron 70-300mm F4/5.6 DI LD (Nikon AFS) lens and processed in GIMP and Photoscape.
