The reconstruction of the Berlin Castle

            ENG: The Humboldt Forum is an exhibition and event building on the Spree Island in the Historic Center of Berlin. It was built from 2012 to 2020 on the site of the historic Berlin Palace. With the presentation of collections of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, the State of Berlin and the Humboldt University, it expands the Museum Island. The Humboldt Forum could only be opened online on December 16, 2020 due to corona.

It was built on the basis of a resolution of the German Bundestag passed by a large majority in a roll call vote on July 4, 2002, for the external "reconstruction of the Berlin Castle," which was considered a "major work of the North German Baroque" and had been completely removed in 1950. Designed by the Italian architect Franco Stella, it features the reconstructed facades of the baroque building on three outer sides and in two inner courtyards, but is completely modern on the inside. The federal government raised 532 million euros for this, the state of Berlin 32 and private donors 105 million euros, the latter exclusively for the reconstruction of the historic appearance. The building is thus the most expensive cultural structure in Germany.

GER: Das Humboldt Forum ist ein Ausstellungs- und Veranstaltungsgebäude auf der Spreeinsel in der Historischen Mitte Berlins. Es wurde von 2012 bis 2020 an der Stelle des historischen Berliner Schlosses errichtet. Mit der Präsentation von Sammlungen der Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz, dem Land Berlin und der Humboldt-Universität erweitert es die Museumsinsel. Das Humboldt-Forum konnte am 16. Dezember 2020 coronabedingt nur online eröffnet werden.

Es entstand aufgrund eines am 4. Juli 2002 in namentlicher Abstimmung mit großer Mehrheit gefassten Beschlusses des Deutschen Bundestages zum äußerlichen „Wiederaufbau des Berliner Schlosses“, das als „Hauptwerk des norddeutschen Barocks“ galt und 1950 restlos beseitigt worden war. Nach Plänen des italienischen Architekten Franco Stella weist es an drei Außenseiten sowie in zwei Innenhöfen die rekonstruierten Fassaden des Barockbaus auf, ist innen aber vollständig modern. Dafür brachten der Bund 532, das Land Berlin 32 und private Spender 105 Millionen Euro auf, letztere ausschließlich für die Rekonstruktion des historischen Aussehens. Das Bauwerk ist somit der teuerste Kulturbau Deutschlands.
