Il leone è una specie della famiglia dei felidi; è un gatto muscoloso, dal petto profondo con una testa corta e arrotondata, un collo corto e orecchie rotonde e un ciuffo peloso all'estremità della coda. È sessualmente dimorfico; i leoni maschi adulti hanno una criniera prominente, che è la caratteristica più riconoscibile della specie. Con una lunghezza tipica da testa a corpo di 184-208 cm i machi sono più grandi delle femmine (160-184 cm). È una specie sociale, che forma gruppi. Gruppi di leoni femmine di solito cacciano insieme, predando principalmente i grandi ungulati. I leoni rappresentano l’apice dei predatori ed é possibile che caccino anche gli esseri umani, anche se in genere non lo fanno. Tipicamente, il leone abita praterie e savane ma è assente in fitte foreste. Di solito è più diurno rispetto ad altri grandi felini. Nel Pleistocene, il leone era presente in tutta l'Eurasia, in Africa e in Nord America, ma oggi è stato ridotto a popolazioni frammentate nell'Africa sub-sahariana e ad una popolazione in pericolo di estinzione nell'India occidentale. Sebbene la causa del declino non sia stata completamente compresa, la perdita di habitat e i conflitti con l'uomo sono le maggiori cause di preoccupazione. Uno dei simboli animali più ampiamente riconosciuti nella cultura umana, il leone è stato ampiamente rappresentato in sculture e dipinti, su bandiere nazionali e in film e letteratura contemporanei. I leoni sono stati tenuti in serragli sin dai tempi dell'Impero Romano e sono stati una specie chiave ricercata per la mostra nei giardini zoologici di tutto il mondo dalla fine del 18° secolo. Le rappresentazioni culturali dei leoni erano importanti nel periodo del Paleolitico superiore; sculture e dipinti delle grotte di Lascaux e Chauvet in Francia sono stati datati a 17.000 anni fa.

The lion is a species in the family Felidae; it is a muscular, deep-chested cat with a short, rounded head, a reduced neck and round ears, and a hairy tuft at the end of its tail. It is sexually dimorphic; adult male lions have a prominent mane, which is the most recognisable feature of the species. With a typical head-to-body length of 184–208 cm they are larger than females at 160–184 cm. It is a social species, forming groups called prides. Groups of female lions usually hunt together, preying mostly on large ungulates. The lion is an apex and keystone predator and have been known to hunt humans, although the species typically does not. Typically, the lion inhabits grasslands and savannas but is absent in dense forests. It is usually more diurnal than other big cats. In the Pleistocene, the lion ranged throughout Eurasia, Africa and North America but today it has been reduced to fragmented populations in Sub-Saharan Africa and one critically endangered population in western India. Although the cause of the decline is not fully understood, habitat loss and conflicts with humans are the greatest causes for concern. One of the most widely recognised animal symbols in human culture, the lion has been extensively depicted in sculptures and paintings, on national flags, and in contemporary films and literature. Lions have been kept in menageries since the time of the Roman Empire and have been a key species sought for exhibition in zoological gardens across the world since the late 18th century. Cultural depictions of lions were prominent in the Upper Paleolithic period; carvings and paintings from the Lascaux and Chauvet Caves in France have been dated to 17,000 years ago.
