Skunk cabbages signal final days of frost

            In west Michigan there are many trails to walk. Seidman Park is maintained by Kent County and has parking at the north and south ends of the rectangular piece of land, dotted with meadows, forest, and patches of wetland, some of which are connected by streams. Normally on a Saturday the sound of small arms fire fills the air from the nearby shooting facility, but thanks to Covid 19 "stay home, stay safe" orders disallowing assembly of people for reasons other than food and medicine, automobile care and other services deemed essential, the park this morning was filled only with birdsong. Despite the airwaves and the air itself being filled with Coronavirus and rumors of coronavirus the daylight grows incrementally longer as the sun moves steadily north until the summer solstice later in June. The season march along no matter what the humans are wrapped up with.
