St Louis, MO Roberts, Johnson and Rand Shoe Company ~ detail

            The Johnsons and the Rands moved to Saint Louis in 1898 and formed the Roberts, Johnson, and Rand Shoe Company. This company and the Peters Shoe Company merged in 1911 and formed the International Shoe Company. The International Shoe Company emerged as the largest single shoe manufacturing company in the country. They acquired Florsheim Shoe Company in 1952. The International Shoe Company changed its name to INTERCO in 1966 as it continued to diversify and expand. INTERCO acquired Ethan Allen in 1979, Broyhill in 1980, Converse in 1986, and then Lane in 1987. It spun off Converse and Florsheim in 1996 and changed its name to Furniture Brands International.

This factory annex to the Roberts, Johnson, and Rand Shoe Company/International Shoe Company building was built in 1930. I have not found the architect. This building while not individually on the National Register is part of the Washington Avenue Historic District, National Register #86003733.
