Ethnological map of Greece, 1918

            Map prepared for the negotiations of the Treaty of Sevres. Appended to "Greece before the Conference", Methuen 1918.

This map was used -- and is historically classed as Greek state propaganda -- for the discussions about territorial claims at the end of WW I. Ultimately, these resulted in the Treaty of Sevres, which Turkey refused to implement.

The criterion used here for allocating ethnic identity is explicitly noted as being "national consciousness": in other words, the actual ethnic group into which persons were born was not considered definitive. In that way, Vlach, Arvanites and some other ethnicities residing in Greece were considered as being Greek.
