Back to the Maastricht travelogue.

The monster on display here is a machine that stores clinker by means of its big & rotating conveyor belts. It was built by Koch (RHM) and is a part of the former Portland cement and clinker factory of the ENCI quarry.

It's shown here in its now decommissioned state. Once clinker (klinker) and portland were produced here. Clinker is semi-finished cement produced by “heating limestone (calcium carbonate) with small quantities of other materials (such as clay) to 1450 °C in a kiln, in a process known as calcination”. Cement, the finished product, “is made by grounding the clinker with a small amount of gypsum into a powder to make 'Ordinary Portland Cement', the most commonly used type of cement (often referred to as OPC). Portland cement is a basic ingredient of concrete, mortar and most non-speciality grout. Portland cement may be grey or white.

The quarry, kiln and factory were by the way the closed in 2018 and are slated for demolition. After that the quarry and demolished part of the industrial complex will be redeveloped as a park. A small part of the quarry is already accessible via a spectacular access stairway. It was created in 2019.
