Strolling Through History - a photo on Flickriver

As I was rounding the corner after taking photos of a cathedral and an abbey, and was on my way to photograph another cathedral, I looked down Abbey Street and saw this old stone arch. Interesting, I thought, and snapped a few photos.

It's called the Black Freren Gate, and is what remains of a medieval Norman-era gate from the city's original 13th-century walls. For comparison, the oldest structure in California is Mission San Juan Capistrano, from 1782, built 500 years later.
