Land, Life, Injustice — The Price of American Progress. Nothing Has Changed. Still Today, It’s the Same.

            Sitting Bull (1831–1890) – Born in the region of the Great Salt Lake, in present-day North Dakota, belonging to the Lakota Sioux tribe, Sitting Bull (Tatanka Iyotake) became one of the greatest chiefs and spiritual leaders of his people. Raised in a nomadic community of bison hunters, he learned from a young age the skills of survival, respect for nature, and leadership.

He was known for his wisdom, courage, and moral integrity. He was not naturally aggressive: he always sought to protect his people and their lands, avoiding unnecessary conflicts, but he knew how to lead resistance when invasions and threats from settlers and the U.S. Army became inevitable.

Sitting Bull did not act as a vengeful warrior: his fight was always defensive, aimed at preserving the traditions, culture, and survival of his tribe. He was respected as both a spiritual and military guide and had a large following among the Lakota. His family was important in his life, but his main mission was the well-being of the Sioux people.

He led his people in numerous battles and conflicts, including the famous **Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876**, where the united forces of the Lakota and Cheyenne defeated Colonel George Armstrong Custer and the U.S. Army. This victory, however, intensified the hunt for the Sioux and forced him to take refuge in Canada for several years to protect his people.

Upon returning to the United States, Sitting Bull continued to fight for the rights and survival of the Sioux, but pressure from the government and army increased. On December 15, 1890, during an attempt by U.S. authorities to arrest him at Fort Yates, North Dakota, fearing he could lead Native resistance during the Ghost Dance movement, Sitting Bull was **killed by gunfire**, along with other members of his family. His death marked the end of an era of open resistance against the invasion of Native territories, but his figure remains a universal symbol of dignity, courage, peaceful resistance, and the defense of his culture.
This series of portraits honors men and women who gave their lives defending truth, justice, and human rights. I want to awaken consciences, showing young people and the world that the people must unite to resist and fight against injustice.
