The Northamptonshire countryside in autumn

            Like much of the rest of England in the autumn, the countryside in Northamptonshire turns a golden yellow. This is primarily due to the ripe wheat and other crops which were in the process of being harvested, leaving golden stubble behind. But much of the grass pastureland also turns yellow due to the lack of rain. Northamptonshire and the counties immediately to the east has about the lowest annual rainfall in the UK. This picture was taken a few miles from Oundle, in the north of the county.

Northamptonshire is predominantly rural and given over mostly to farmland. There are no cities and only five towns of any size. Half the population lives in one of these - Northampton itself. It used to be called "the county of spires and squires" on account of the many beautiful stone-built ancient churches and the large country estates. But these days it is most closely associated with the Bridget Jones films, where it is home to her parents.
