"New year, new life" - a photo on Flickriver

Mushrooms, and by extension fungi, are very fascinating. The part we see (and sometimes eat) is the mere fruit of a larger, more complex organism. I used to enjoy seeing them when I studied in Edinburgh and I love seeing the tiny ones here in Barbados after a few days of rain. I was recently digging about my backyard and almost stepped on these strange specimens which, after some quick google research, appear to be a variety of Stinkhorn mushroom with the scientific name "Clathrus Crispus". While the name "stinkhorn" holds true (they were pretty putrid), it didn't stop me from getting up close with my phone. And they weren't tiny, about two to four across. I've honestly never seen them before, ever.

It is said that the mushroom represents good luck, longevity, energy, safety, prosperity, rebirth and change (both good and bad). I can see the rebirth part, after all they're mostly found in rotting and damp places, on the undersides of dying organic materials like trees and wood. Maybe I can frame this as a bit of a metaphor for the past year...and hope that the ashes of 2020 and 2021 give us fuel for new life and possibilities in 2022.
