Whirlpool River Looking South - a photo on Flickriver

            Jasper National Park, Alberta

The Whirlpool River flows north from the Hooker Icefield and the Mount Brown Icefield.  It eventually connects with the Athabasca River just north of of the falls.  Geraldine Peak is in the background.

The brown trees are dead, killed by a mountain pine beetle attack. Pine beetles have killed 40+ million acres of forest in British Columbia and Alberta.  Warmer winters have contributed to the devastation.  Fortunately, last winter was colder and the population of beetles decreased.  It's still a terrible problem.
