At certain times of the year,mainly summer, the dreaded Blue Bottle Jellyfish or Pacific Man-O-War jellyfish find their way to the sandy shores of Australian Beaches including Lord Howe Island.Trailing long tentacles they move at the behest of the currents and inflict quite a painful whelt wherever the tentacles come in contact with the skin.

The Blue Bottle Jellyfish or Pacific Man-o-War is not a true jellyfish it is actually a type of hydroid. It has a gas-filled float that is usually bluish purple and can grow up to 150mm long,although is usually only 20-80mm long. It can inflict stings when it is alive in the water or on the beach, or even when it is dead.

Unlike some of their North Queensland cousins (eg Box Jelly Fish or Sea Wasp) the Pacific Man O War is not likely to kill a human being.

While no fatalities have been confirmed from these animals in the Southern Hemisphere there have been several fatalities from related species ( Physalia physalis ) in the Northern Hemisphere.
In the Northern Hemisphere the species is larger,up to 250mm,and is known as the Portuguese Man-of-War Jellyfish and can be found in the Gulf of Mexico, in the Caribbean Sea near the Bahamas, and in the West Indies.
