Old Soldiers Road is a rough gravel road that runs off the Lakesway about 3 km along the road to Tuncurry from the Diamond Beach exit off the freeway heading south.
The road has been contentious in that it runs through Knappinghat Nature Reserve emerging at Diamond Beach and attempts by the former Taree City Council to negotiate a potential route to eventually build a sealed 100kmph road though to Diamond Beach have been vigorously resisted by National Parks.
As I understand it however in the last 12 months or so agreement has now been reached on a route which travels along the southern boundaries of Knappinghat Nature Reserve.
Council will however only build the road if its construction can be paid for substantially by developer contributions from those proposing rural subdivisions along the route.
The road is arguably necessary as only one sealed access road in to Hallidays Point exists and that is Black Head Road.
With the compulsory amalgamation of Taree, Great Lakes and Gloucester Councils now confirmed by the NSW State Government it is likely that less parochialism will intervene in the decision to build the road which had been  previously championed by Taree City Council as a faster way to bring Hallidays Point traffic to Taree for access to services and shopping. The current Black Head Road arguably makes access to Tuncurry faster.
It is unlikely that any upgrade of Old Soldiers Road will occur until Diamond Beach begins to burst at the seams. How long that will be is anyone's guess.
Interestingly many drivers accessing the Hallidays Point area from the north are directed via their satellite navigation down Old Soldiers Road. While a sedan car can safely negotiate the road it is very rough, narrow and often in quite poor condition so Black Head Road further along the Lakes Way is a better option for non 4 wheel drive vehicles.
Note - Incidentally this image shows the council maintained section of the road  and not the more lengthy minimally maintained narrow tree lined and rough National Park maintained section of the road closer to Diamond Beach.
Its worth also noting that the unseen land on the left side of the road to the north of the trees in the road reserve has been totally cleared right up to the road reserve fence. This means that if ever the road is widened in the future that all these trees will go making for a very different drive down this road.
