Saltwells Nature Reserve, December 2nd. 2021.

            I met Brian and his wife today near the big tree that some refer to as the Old Man Of The Woods. In his eighties now, Brian told me that as a boy he used to climb the tree and meet his friends at its base. As a lad he was a keen footballer and played for his school team. He played against an opposing team that included Duncan Edwards who went on to play for England and was tragically killed in the Munich Air Disaster in 1958. Dudley Town centre has a statue which commemorates Edwards.

Brian regularly passes the tree on his walks. It's amazing that the tree has been there throughout his long life and for many generations before. It was lovely to encounter him and his wife today and to learn something of their story and more about the Saltwells area. I think his expression retains something of the boy who climbed that tree so long ago.
