Blythe-a-Day 4. Music makes the people come together: "The Heiress" Catherine Sloper & Morris Townsend

            The film “The Heiress” (1949) starred Olivia De Havilland, who won her 2nd Best Actress Oscar, Montgomery Clift, and Ralph Richardson.  Based on Henry James “Washington Square,” it tells the story of the rich, plain, very shy Catherine, living with her very cold father, Dr. Sloper, who is convinced Catherine is so inferior to her beautiful, dead mother that that she will be a ‘spinster’ who will live at home forever. But then, Catherine meets Morris Townsend—and their lives are turned upside down…

19th Century New York:

At last the night of the party to which Catherine had looked forward with great excitement had arrived. Instead of simply staying at home with her father, Dr. Sloper, she would be among people her own age who, she imagined, lived a life of romance and excitement of which she could only dream...

As the dancing began, Catherine suddenly felt tense. Would any gentlemen want to dance with her or would they see her as her father did: plain, homely, dull, and colorless?

Despite her inner fear, she kept a smile on her face in order to try to look happy--after all, she thought, no gentleman would approach a girl with a frowning, unhappy face.

Suddenly, a charming and handsome gentleman approached her. 

"Miss Sloper, let me introduce myself. My name is Morris Townsend. I would be ever so delighted if you would dance with me."

Catherine beamed. Such an elegant man had asked to dance with her. Furthermore, after their first dance, with a slight smile, he told her, "You are the only girl with whom I shall dance all evening. When you are dancing with others, I shall simply wait...alone."

Morris he looked deeply into her eyes as he made this proclamation.

Catherine had never been so delighted. Such an attractive gentleman seeming to be enamored of her!  

"And to think that before this evening, we were completely unknown to one another!"

Alas, Catherine, how wrong you are. Morris Townsend knows full well who you are: the daughter of the wealthy Dr. Sloper; a girl who is rumored to have inherited many thousands of dollars from her late mother.

Is he enamored of you, Catherine, or your wealth? One can only hope that he is attracted to you...but only time will tell.
