The Century Tree(s) - a photo on Flickriver

            The Century Tree, or Dalakit as it is known locally is a balete tree. Balete tree are several species of the trees from the genus Ficus. A number of these are known as strangler figs wherein they start upon other trees, later entrapping them entirely and finally killing the host tree.
This example is found in the volcanic area of Canlaon and is not 1 but over 13 centuries old.  Aside from being tagged as the "oldest tree" of the Philippines, Dalakit is so gigantic in size that it takes about 42 grown men to encircle the trunk with their hands outstretched. 
For me (even as a forester), this is the biggest tree I ever saw anywhere.
