Ilyushin IL-76 50th Birthday - a photo on Flickriver

            The Ilyushin IL-76 first flew in 1971. My first sighting of one was 10 years later on 1st May 1981 YI-AIP of Iraqi Airways at London Heathrow departing on May 2nd where I was eagerly waiting with my camera! Since then I began to chase them around the UK and then abroad for the next 40 years! The first visit to the UK was CCCP-76510 to London Heathrow operating Aeroflot SU1241 on 6th December 1978, I later caught up with this particular example at Manston when she operated for Inversija of Latvia. In the 1980s there were a few sightings mainly Aeroflot, Syrianair, and Iraqi Airways the latter was a frequent visitor to London Heathrow in the mid to late 80s. The 1990s was the golden period when the Iron curtain came down and opened up the Eastern bloc and Russia to the west. Favorite places to see these mighty Candids were Manston, Moscow, Ostend, Sharjah, and London Stansted. Certainly my favorite aircraft type from there on in.
