            LEGEND OF GRASSY COVE'S PETRIFIED SOLIDER
During the Civil War, saltpeter, used in making gunpowder, was mined in local caves and was purchased by both Union and Confederate forces as they passed through the cove. Shortly after the war the petrified body of a Confederate soldier in full uniform was discovered by a group of cave explorers. The body was taken to the coroner's office, but no one claimed it. Eventually it was buried in the Methodist Cemetery in Grassy Cove. According to the legend, this is when the unrest began. Fear of the soldier's ghost arose among residents; people refused to go to the church out of fear. He was therefore disinterred and buried at a still-undisclosed location.
