Wild Basin - a photo on Flickriver

Wild Basin

            Olde Man of the Mountain (Hymenoxis grandiflora) throws radial strokes of yellow outward with abandon on the slopes of Meadow Mountain, Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado. Looking across Wild Basin, the blurry summit of Longs Peak is visible to the north on a fine summer's morning.

A friend and I hiked a long, semi-off-trail circuit in the Park this past July in an attempt to prepare ourselves for the more demanding trip we planned to Jasper around Labor Day. We left Boulder before the sun came up and started the day with a significant climb up to Meadow Mountain via a trail-less, forested ridgeline. At the time, I thought it was relatively difficult but not overly taxing, and a good indicator that we'd be able to handle the extended off-trail foray waiting to greet us at the end of August. The sun shone, the ground was firm and dry, the flowers magnificent, and the views besotting. Best of all, when the time came to descend the thickly forested valley that lies between the Olde Man and Longs Peak in this image, there was a well-maintained and relatively highly trafficked NPS trail. How could it be any different deep in the Canadian wilderness? One marvels at one's capacity for unwarranted confidence and overweening optimism.
